Aim: Rural electrification is viewed as a prime mover for rural development and the basic pre-requisite for all industrial activities besides contributing significantly to increase agricultural productivity, creating employment and income generation. However, distribution of electricity to rural areas through grid connectivity is more complex by virtue of its nature as it involves high cost & technical losses, besides, demand are very low and scattered. In these circumstances, decentralized generation and distribution is the convenient mode for supply of electricity to remote and far-flung rural areas. In recent times, attempt has been made to harness and manage the distribution of electricity at local level with people's participation for adequate distribution at affordable prices. Objectives: 1) FAmiliarize participants with recent practices in rural electrification and emerging trends in rural power management 2) Impart knowledge on planning and management for rural electricity distribution sector 3) Discuss different issues about power distributed power generation options for rural electrification through mini and micro grids.

Under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Programme instituted by the ministry of external affairs (mea), ris has been conducting an Annual Science Diplomacy training programme in 2017,2018,2019 and 2020. The programme could not be conducted in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The key objective of this programme is to expose participants to the various aspects of science diplomacy with the following emphasis : To use science diplomacy for achieving national development, to build better relations among countries and participate more effectively in international discussions on science and technology-related matters. The ITEC course covers a wide range of themes, including various aspects of science diplomacy, trends in global science and technology, current and future international science. And technology issues, and the growing role of south-south cooperation in science and technology. IT includes exposure to India's progress in sectors such a space applications ICT, biotechnology, health, food, and agriculture, renewable energy, civil nuclear programme, ocean science, and nanotechnology. The specific programmes such as digital India, Ayushman Bharat Adhar, vaccines and health services, etc are also included. The course includes field visits to international projects where India has taken a lead role such as the International Solar Alliance (ISA), Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), International Centre for Genetic
Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), etc. The numbers of participants in ITEC programmes in the year 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 were 35, 31, 34, and 31 respectively.
